BUCS Regionals

Last weekend our first team travelled to Edinburgh to take part in the BUCS Regionals to qualify for either plate, trophy or championship. Realistically we knew it was between trophy or plate depending on how we got on.

We arrived on the Friday night, found the nearest spoons, played some questionably easy trivial pursuit; followed by a relatively early night and a good rest for most of us... apart from the occasional snoring.

Up early on Saturday to play our first match against Manchester 1, and as always, we tend to play badly in our first match, so this was an unsurprising loss, but spirits were still high and we had many more games to play later in the day.

Next up Northumbria. Now there has always been an undoubtable rivalry between Northumbria and Newcastle as a whole and it's no different in when it comes to korfball. Coach Chris made it clear that we had to win this one and we were confident until the last minute when a penalty to Northumbria caused a final score of 3-2 to them. #awks. But fair play to Northumbria who played well and we did get a rematch later in the day.

Next game was against Leeds 1. Like Manchester, we hadn't played them this year so we weren't sure of our chances and despite us getting better throughout the day, it was another loss to us. Then Strathclyde, we had played them at prelims and knew they were a great team, so just went into it trying our best. Despite a great penalty from Chris, free pass from Liam and a goal from Mary (which shows that sprinting when changing ends really can pay off) it was still a loss to us.

After a lunch break stood in the cold due to a fire alarm, (at least we had foil blankets), we had two more matches in the afternoon. First up... Ed Uni 2. We had very narrowly beaten them at prelims so we knew this was going to be a close match. Unfortunately this was another loss to us, so at this point we knew we would be heading to plate and had one more match to decide whether we placed 9th or 10th- and of course, it was against Northumbria.

We were aching and tired but also desperate to win a match today, so we put everything into the last match. In the first 10 seconds, Chris' division managed to pull off the infamous 'Turkey' (Evi your legacy still remains..). I think that gave us the confidence to keep scoring and playing the best all day for a 10-3 win to place us in a high seed for national plate!
