BUCS Regionals

Welcome back everyone and here is all you need to know about the first team's day at BUCS Regionals. To give you a bit of context we had previously been to Glasgow for Prelims in December, where the first team qualified for Regionals. This means that whatever happens at Regionals you're guaranteed to go to a Finals. The only question being is which one; Championships 1st-4th , Trophy 5th-8th or Plate 9th-10th.

In the group stages we faced Manchester 1&2, Leeds and Strathclyde. Our first game was against Manchester 1, a complete unknown to us as we'd never played them before so we went with our usual, let's just do us approach and narrowly lost 4-3. Not a bad result given we were quite sloppy and they ended up heading off to Champs. We bounced back quickly though to reverse the score line against Manchester 2 getting us back on track. Next up was Leeds 1 who Chris and Hyun Gyu were pretty scared of because they have a history of being unstoppable. But stopped they were as we played probably our best korf of the day to grab a 5-5 draw that went to the wire. They missed two penalties in a row at the end of the game. As a result this blew the group wide open as Strathclyde had been felled by Manchester 2s. We couldn't quite capitalise though as in our game against Strathclyde some early silly errors meant we were fighting to regain the lead and the game ended 4-3 to Strathclyde.

So to clear all of that up we ended coming fourth in the group and set up a tie with the old enemy, Northumbria for a spot in the Trophy. Safe to say a resounding 10-3 win meant we cruised through and showed that we could have pushed higher up the table in the morning.

All that was left now was a 7th/8th showdown with St Andrews. Safe to say by this point we'd kinda crashed and burned on the fitness front and ended up losing to finish 8th.

So all in all a pretty decent day at the office. We managed to get through to Trophy which is a step up from last year and we definitely got better as the day went on.

Male MVP: Fateh Singh

Female MVP and Joint Top Scorer: Evi Sengers

Male and Joint Top Scorer: Chris Baker

Would also like to give a shoutout to Matt for his first team debut and to Blythe and Beefcake for structuring the attacks really well.

Now for the sad part, unfortunately this is the last time we will see Evi in a Newcastle shirt (mind you I said that last time so hopefully if I keep saying it she'll keep coming back). Thank you for being not just a brilliant player but a brilliant friend to everyone in the club and you'll be sorely missed. All the best of luck for back in Holland!

Next up the 2s take on Titans as action returns to the NEKL on Sunday 3rd February 5pm KO at the Sports Centre for anyone who is keen to come down and watch you'd be more than welcome. It's also our last session before the 2s head of to BUCS Qualifiers in Leeds to try and grab a spot in National Plate.

Until next time, HOWAY THE KORF!
